He is the author, editor or co-author of over 20 books, and well-known as an authority on the history of early modern English Catholicism, monastic history, the history of exorcism, the history of magic, the cult of St Edmund, British fairy lore, and pre-Christian Baltic religion. He is also a professional indexer of academic books and a translator specialising in medieval and early modern Latin.
