Navy Connection : One popular theory links the phrase to Josephus Daniels, who was Secretary of the Navy under President Woodrow Wilson. In 1914, Daniels banned alcohol on Navy ships, and as a result, sailors turned to coffee as their go-to beverage. Coffee supposedly became known as "Joe" in reference to him, though this connection is debated. 2. Joe" as Slang for the Common Man: Another theory suggests that "Joe" has long been used as slang for an average person, as in "the average Joe." Coffee, being a simple and popular drink among common people, might have earned the nickname "cup of Joe" for its association with the everyman. 3. Shortened Version of "Jamoke" Some believe that "cup of joe" is a shortened form of "jamoke," which itself was a blend of "java" (a type of coffee) and "mocha." Over time, "jamoke" was shortened to "joe," becoming a more casual term for coffee. 4. Martinson Coffee Company: A more commercial theory points to the Martinson Coffee Company, which branded its coffee as "Joe's Coffee" in the early 1900s. This might have contributed to the phrase becoming popular. Although none of these theories is definitive, the phrase remains in common use today, embodying the everyday appeal of coffee!!
