Monarchies have often fallen before their societies were fully prepared to confront the practical and moral challenges of republican rule.In this episode, we explore the English Civil War as the culmination of more than a century of political and constitutional tension. From the aftermath of the Wars of the Roses to the centralisation of authority under the Tudors, power gradually shifted from a competing nobility to a single ruling dynasty. The creation of the King’s Council in 1536 by Henry VIII marked a decisive stage in this process.Yet the Tudor monarchs’ need to summon Parliament to legitimise radical religious reforms unintentionally strengthened parliamentary authority, giving it a growing sense of autonomy and purpose. This latent tension came to a head under the House of Stuart, whose insistence on the Divine Right of Kings clashed with an increasingly assertive political nation.The resulting revolution led England, uniquely, to the execution of its own king and a bold experiment in republican government.
