History of Superhero Films: The Flash Gordon Serials

from Pop Culture Historians · host Ryan Ritter

This week, the Pop Culture Historians start a new series, dedicated to the history of superheroes on film! We go as far as back as we can, to the arguable start of the genre, the Flash Gordon film serials (1936’s FLASH GORDON, 1938’s FLASH GORDON’S TRIP TO MARS and 1940’s FLASH GORDON CONQUERS THE UNIVERSE)! We discuss what old film serials were like, as well as our thoughts on whether this unofficial Flash Gordon trilogy has held up over the decades. If you’re curious, you can watch all three serials on YouTube. They can be found at either the Long Forgotten Videos channel (https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLESDrGLwFOLXT0jfvQVzzvQzEaV-3F13u) or the Demented Features channel (https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PL5m94w0uZewtRgdYe2SbPWES2tTBiWhAO).
