from History of the Bay · host Dregs One
History of the Bay Day Oct. 19th at the Midway SF with Souls of Mischief, Mob Figaz, Kamaiyah & more - tickets: https://www.tixr.com/groups/midwaysf/events/history-of-the-bay-113087 -- Kamaiyah took the hip-hop scene by storm when she emerged with her hit "How Does It Feel." But she started with humble beginnings going through the foster care system in Oakland. Inspired by people from Missy Elliot to 2pac, Kamaiyah started writing poetry at a young age and eventually working with local rappers like DB The General and D-Lo. When she started dropping her own solo projects, this eventually led her to sign a record deal with YG's 4Hunnid Entertainment. Although she created hits for YG and Drake, and had an album in the works with Kehlani, she grew frustrated with the label situation and went independent. Now Kamaiyah continues to put out her projects independently and prove why she is one of the most unique voices in hip-hop today. --- History of the Bay Spotify Playlist: https://open.spotify.com/playlist/3ZUM4rCv6xfNbvB4r8TVWU?si=9218659b5f4b43aa Online Store: https://dregsone.myshopify.com Follow Dregs One: Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/artist/1UNuCcJlRb8ImMc5haZHXF?si=poJT0BYUS-qCfpEzAX7mlA Instagram: https://instagram.com/dregs_one TikTok: https://tiktok.com/@dregs_one Twitter: https://twitter.com/dregs_one Facebook: https://facebook.com/dregsone415 00:00 Intro 02:15 Musical influences 04:03 Growing up in foster care 15:41 Musical influences 20:52 The Hyphy movement 23:46 Recording with DB The General, D-Lo 25:29 “How Does It Feel” blowing up 31:49 Celebrities 35:42 Signing to YG 38:26 Album with Kehlani 40:49 Women in the music industry 44:28 Female rappers 51:06 Going independent
