History of the Inquisition of Spain, Vol. 4 by Henry Charles Lea | Mysticism, Heresy & the Spanish Inquisition Part 2

⭐ Catholic Review — 3.5/5 Stars A valuable but strongly critical historical study of one of the most controversial institutions in Catholic and Spanish history. Lea provides extensive documentation concerning Catholic mysticism, heresy investigations, inquisitorial procedure, ecclesiastical authority, and the relationship between Church and state, making the work useful for understanding how religious authority operated in early-modern Spain. However, Lea's interpretation is decidedly historical and critical rather than devotional or apologetic, and Catholic readers should distinguish his nineteenth-century historical judgments from authoritative Catholic teaching. Recommended for serious students of Catholic history, the Spanish Church, religious persecution, and the complex relationship between faith, institutional authority, and political power.
