Among Tribal Nations in the United States, it is commonplace, even policy, to open events and gatherings by acknowledging the traditional Indigenous inhabitants of that land. Acknowledgment is a simple, powerful way of showing respect and a step toward correcting the stories and practices that erase Indigenous people’s history and culture and toward inviting and honoring the truth. I acknowledge the lands of the Native Americans who established the small towns of Port Arthur, Orange, Beaumont, and the City of Houston, all located in Texas and lands of my ancestors that contributed to my families lives and my own. Opening to a powerful interview with United Against Human Trafficking representative Ken Henry, a man who has dedicated his life to end human trafficking.
