Listen to a powerful interview with the Save Haven Baby Boxes, Founder Monica Kelsey a woman who was abandoned as a baby at a small hospital in Ohio. Kelsey grew up to start Safe Haven Baby Boxes, Inc. once she learned she had been abandoned as an infant and after seeing a "Baby Box" in operation at a church, in Cape Town, South Africa. She has made it her personal mission to educate others on the Safe Haven Laws that give #Mothers and #Parents in Crisis the Option of Legally Surrendering their Baby in all 50 States up to 30 days (some states up to 60 days) or younger – to emergency personnel; a hospital, firehouse, police station, college campus police, and walk away with no questions asked or criminal charges. Be inspired by her journey, what art has inpired her work the legacy of baby Amelia, and the amount of abandoned babies her foundation has saved, as she and her family do whatever it takes to save the lives of innocent babies from being abandoned. We open by paying tribute to the USDAC: Honor Native Lands Project (HNL). Among Tribal Nations in the United States, it is commonplace, even policy, to open events and gatherings by acknowledging the traditional Indigenous inhabitants of that land. Acknowledgment is a simple, powerful way of showing respect and a step toward correcting the stories and practices that erase Indigenous people’s history and culture and toward inviting and honoring the truth. I acknowledge the lands of the Native Americans who established the small towns of Port Arthur, Orange, Beaumont, and the City of Houston, all located in Texas and lands of my families ancestors. The Eighth HeadStuff Podcasts HeadStuff Podcast Network presents The Eighth, a podcast series documenting the upcoming referendum on the Eighth Amendment to the constitution of Ireland. Going beyond the ten minute head-to-heads and media talking points, The Eighth has long, sticky, moral and open conversations with people on all sides of the debate and none, those in the middle ground and those who are confused about how to vote in the referendum. We ask: where do both sides of the debate part ways? Is it right to morally equate the life of the woman with prenatal life? And when does life truly begin? This podcast attempts to answer these questions, and more, through the lens of a pro-choice host who is attempting to bring clarity, understanding and some degree of common ground to this incredibly fraught space.
