Hollywood Production Halted By Protest from Writers Guild (WGA) Picket Lines (ep.276)

The Writers Guild of America (WGA) has gone on strike due to the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers' refusal to address issues surrounding compensation for writers in the evolving media landscape, including the use of AI in screenwriting. The strike impacts over 800,000 direct employees and 2.4 million total supported in the industry, with $81 billion in industry wages and $186 billion in total production spending at stake. Major guilds and unions, including the SAG-AFTRA and Directors Guild of America, are supporting the WGA in negotiations with the AMPTP. The strike has resulted in many scripted projects being put on hold, including late-night shows, such as “Jimmy Kimmel Live,” “The Late Show,” “The Tonight Show,” and “The Daily Show.” The strike is the first since the COVID pandemic and the first WGA strike in 15 years.
