For over 1,600 years, Christians worldwide have commemorated the final days of Jesus' life during Holy Week. Today marks Holy Monday, a day that recalls the moment when Jesus entered the temple in Jerusalem with a whip he had fashioned himself (John 2:15). The temple was intended to be a sacred space where pilgrims from all corners of the globe could offer sacrifices and receive absolution from God. However, the religious authorities had decided to transform the temple courtyard, which was typically reserved for non-Jewish worshippers, into a marketplace for sacrificial animals. This move ensured tighter control and greater profits for the Jewish elite who oversaw the markets, but it came at the expense of non-Jewish pilgrims who were left without a place to worship. Instead of hearing prayers in various languages, the temple was filled with the sounds of braying animals, haggling vendors, and the stench of manure. The worship of the nations was sacrificed so that a select few could line their pockets.
