Homeland Security Weekly Update - Aug 1, 2026

In this week’s update, we examine escalating cyber attacks by foreign adversaries on America’s roughly 170,000 public water and wastewater systems. A late-July coordinated campaign hit more than 30 municipal systems across Minnesota, with similar activity in at least seven states. Threat actors targeted programmable logic controllers, locking out operators, forcing manual operations, and triggering boil-water notices. We assess Iranian involvement, parallel threats from Chinese and Russian actors, and the urgent steps operators must take to isolate exposed devices before the next wave of attacks.
