Homeless in America: All There Is
from ALL THERE IS · host Kelly Bargabos
When was the last time I went a day without food? What must it be like to not know where your next meal would come from? To not know the next time you would be full? What is it like to know hunger? My personal experience inspired me to volunteer at our city's Rescue Mission and serve Sunday lunch to hungry people. This personal essay was originally published on www.merliterary.com in April 2020. November is Homelessness Awareness Month. On any given night in America, more than 500,000 people are experiencing homelessness. 70% are individuals living on their own or in the company of other homeless adults. 30% are families with children. The great majority of homeless are men or youth boys, and almost half of the population is unsheltered and living in situations not fit for human beings.
