Hoewel het aantal mensen dat geregistreerd staat om te stemmen nooit eerder zo hoog was, is de opkomst sinds 2007 aan het dalen. Bij de vorige landelijke verkiezingen in 2022 daalde de opkomst tot het laagste niveau sinds de invoering van de stemplicht in 1925. Vooral in afgelegen gebieden gaan minder mensen stemmen.
