Hope Around The Manger
from St Mark Sermons Hosted by St Mark Coptic Orthodox Church
This sermon, delivered on the Feast of the Nativity, centers on hope born through the humility of Christ's birth. Fr Thomas opens by recalling the joy inherent in any child's birth, then magnifies that to the birth of the Son of God, quoting St. John Chrysostom's homily on the Nativity describing the wonder of heaven and earth uniting at the manger. Fr Thomas acknowledges the real suffering of the time — pandemic losses, isolation, financial and emotional hardship — but insists that gathering around the manger daily restores perspective: rich and poor, righteous and sinner, are all equalized and comforted in the presence of Christ, who is love itself. The central theme is that hope comes through humility and surrender. Just as Christ willingly chose the lowliness of a manger to reconcile heaven and earth, we are called to surrender our circumstances to God. The congregation's yearly theme, "anchored in hope" and centered on Christ, ties to this idea: no problem is too big, no sin too great, because He is Immanuel — God with us — who never abandons His people. The sermon closes with practical encouragement: keep Christ at the center of daily life, follow the "star" as the Magi did toward the manger, and remain strong in faith, trusting that the hope found in the Christ child is unchanging despite difficult circumstances.
