Hope of life is the beginning and end of our faith

On the Eighteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time our Church invites us to first read and reflect on a scripture passage from the beginning of the book of the prophet Amos (1:1-2; 3) entitled" The Lord's judgement on the nations". Our treasure, which follows, is from the beginning of a letter attributed to Barnabas. Saint Barnabas was one of the earliest and most respected leaders of the Church, a Jewish Levite from the island of Cyprus whose birth name was Joseph. After Paul the Apostle converted to Christ, many Christians were understandably afraid of him because of his former persecution of the Church. Barnabas took Paul under his wing, introduced him to the Apostles in Jerusalem. Together they embarked on the Church's first great missionary journey, preaching the Gospel and establishing Christian communities throughout Asia Minor. He is best known for recognizing and nurturing Paul's vocation, encouraging the early Christian communities, his extraordinary generosity, and his tireless missionary zeal, making him a model of encouragement, reconciliation, and faithful service to the Gospel. Amos was an eighth-century B.C. prophet from the village of Tekoa in the southern kingdom of Judah. Although he was a shepherd and a dresser of sycamore fig trees rather than a professional prophet, God called him to proclaim His message primarily to the wealthy northern kingdom of Israel during a time of peace and prosperity under King Jeroboam II. The Book of Amos was written to call God's people back to covenant faithfulness by teaching that true worship must be accompanied by justice, mercy, and moral integrity. His prophecy reminds every generation that authentic faith is demonstrated not only in worship but also in the way we treat our neighbor, especially the poor, vulnerable, and powerless. Taken together, these two readings teach that God is both perfectly just and infinitely merciful, calling every person and every nation to repentance, holiness, and steadfast hope in Him. In the opening of the Book of Amos, the prophet proclaims that the Lord judges all nations according to His righteous standards, condemning injustice, violence, and unfaithfulness. God's judgment reminds us that no one is beyond His authority and that genuine faith must be reflected in lives marked by justice, mercy, and obedience. The Letter of Barnabas, our "treasure" today, complements this message by teaching that the Christian life begins and ends with the hope of eternal life made possible through Jesus Christ. This hope is not wishful thinking but a confident trust that inspires believers to persevere in faith, reject sin, and live according to God's will. Together, these readings show that awareness of God's righteous judgment should not lead to fear alone but to conversion and hope, for those who trust in Christ and faithfully follow Him can live with confidence that God's mercy will triumph and lead them to eternal life.
