Hope You Can See Isn't Hope | Romans 8:24-25

Your room is better than it was in January. Cleaner transitions, three more people on the roster, a group chat that has gone quiet in the good way instead of the bad way. And you are standing in an emptying auditorium after a Sunday that went well, with something sitting on your chest, and you cannot work out why a good week feels like this. Everything you can point to is a thing you have stopped hoping for. What is left on your list is invisible.Romans 8:24-25. World English Bible. "For we were saved in hope, but hope that is seen is not hope. For who hopes for that which he sees? But if we hope for that which we don't see, we wait for it with patience."Paul is defining hope by subtraction, which is almost annoying. You do not hope for the person who came back. You do not hope for the drummer you already have. Those graduated. So the permanent condition of anybody who is actually hoping is a list of things that have not shown up. Which means the weight on your chest at the end of a good Sunday is not ingratitude. It is the shape of what you were saved into.We asked five hundred and ninety four worship leaders what they find hardest about ministry. Somebody answered in two words and a punctuation mark. THE WAIT. All capitals, exclamation point. Another wrote about waiting testing their patience many times. A third put it in five words. Waiting to see growth. Nobody wrote a paragraph. The guy running audio at your church asked for one specific box across three budget cycles. He stopped asking. He still shows up at seven in the morning and makes it sound right with what he has. Three years is a long time to keep doing that.Paul puts a word on the waiting that is worth knowing. Hypomone. It is built out of two pieces that mean under and remain. The picture I use for it is a wall. It is not asking how you feel about the weight. It is asking whether you are still under it. Which means the weeks you served with a bad attitude still counted.
