Hosea 12–13: Jacob’s Deceit, Baal’s Death Sentence, and Victory Over Death

In Hosea 11:12–13:16, Hosea brings Israel’s covenant rebellion into sharp focus. The prophet reaches back to the story of Jacob, exposing the tragic irony of a nation that inherited Jacob’s cunning but failed to follow his example of wrestling with God, seeking His blessing, and turning toward repentance.Israel’s deception was not merely political. Ephraim pursued alliances with both Assyria and Egypt while simultaneously embracing Baal worship and other idols. Hosea presents this as covenant treason—rebellion against the God who had delivered Israel from Egypt and established her as His people.The consequences are devastating.
