The rune making the "S" sound in Elder Futhark, for example, also means sun or victory. Over time, especially after the Viking age, the language used by Danes, Swedes, and Norwegians diverged from each other due to outside cultural and religious influences, with runes dying out almost entirely, except in Sweden, where they were used until the 1800s!
