Transcript Host 1: Well, Florida State... they’re a brand, but they have not been relevant in the ACC in a few years since Jordan Travis and the infamous hosting, right? Host 2: Mm-hmm. Host 1: Let’s hear, let’s listen and react. You and I, to Mike Norvell. He is right behind us right now as we speak, and we got a chance to catch up with him earlier today. Let’s start with the identity. What does Mike Norvell think the identity of this football team will be in 2026? Mike Norvell: I mean, it’s a team that’s resilient, that’s tough, that, you know, goes out there and, you know, they play the game the right way. They play tough, smart, disciplined football. Um, you know, they play with confidence, in the speed of what, you know, how we approach things. Uh, you know, physical nature, and a team that goes and finishes. And, you know, that’s, that’s, you know, coming off a year where, you know, there’s, there’s a lot of, you know, uh, narrow defeats that we faced. You know, it’s to be a team that can go and put our, put our stamp on a game and to finish it the right way, and to do that throughout the course of the year. I mean, that’s, that’s what I want people to see from this team. Host 1: Identity in 2026, that’s going to be important. You know, last year, I mean, we saw them a couple of times, Diesel, especially against Clemson. Since Jordan Travis left, this team, I don't want to say it too loud, they haven't had an identity offensively. Host 2: Offensively or defensively, you know? I mean, Florida State was always just a monster, heavy-hitting kind of team, and they got to get back to that kind of defense. That kind of, you know, the fear of going into Doak Campbell Stadium. Can they get that back? Host 1: Yeah, those two words haven't been used in a long time in the same sentence: "fear" and "Doak Campbell." That’s what I’m saying, like, it’s been a while. Host 2: Yeah. Host 1: Phil Steele has them projected to finish ninth. Ninth. So not great, right? Uh, Ashton Daniels Sr., is that the guy you mentioned from Ohio State, Diesel? Maybe that’s somebody else projected to be their quarterback Day 1. Uh, let’s go to the offensive line group. Mike Norvell on this year’s OL group, and if it can be better. A big area last year of concern was this offensive line. Here’s Mike. Mike Norvell: I feel as confident going into this season, you know, with the, the personnel of the guys up front as I have. I mean, it’s, I think this is a really good group. Uh, some guys that have to do it at Florida State, obviously, and, um, but when you look at the experience, when you look at the talent, the ability, the cohesiveness, um, you know, I was grateful for this spring. I know I mentioned it earlier, you know, last spring we didn’t, really didn’t have an OL, at least, our, or the guys that ended up starting didn’t go through spring practice. And so, you know, to see what these guys have been able to do together in a short period of time, how they’ve carried that into the summer, you know, this is uh, got a chance to be a... you know, a first-class unit. Host 1: So, here’s what’s interesting about this offensive line, Diesel. This is another year, a second straight year, that Mike Norvell, who is sitting right behind us, has had to rebuild this offensive line. Host 2: Mm-hmm. Host 1: All five departed from a season ago. They got transfers from Auburn—two guys from Auburn—Bowling Green, Troy, and an FCS starter. Now, you just heard him say... Host 2: Yeah. Host 1: ...that this was the most confidence he’s felt about the offensive line group. That’s not saying much. No, 107 career starts. I don’t know. I think it’s going to take time for this offensive line group. Host 2: It’s—it’s going to be tough. I mean, you know, you look at what they were able to produce offensively with push up front. Could they get anything going in the run game last year? Well, it was just wildly inconsistent. You know, you take out the outliers like Kent ...
