HOUR 2 | Segment 2 - Clemson football defense preview and player interviews.

from Wire 2 Wire with Diesel and Cole Bryson

This segment of Wire2Wire focuses on the Clemson Tigers' football team, specifically analyzing their defensive outlook for the upcoming season under defensive coordinator Tom Allen. The hosts emphasize that the defense must serve as the team's core strength if they are to improve upon their previous 7-6 record, particularly with a challenging season opener on the road against LSU. Broadcasting live from the ACC Kickoff Radio Row, the hosts interview two key defensive players: defensive end Will Heldt and linebacker Sammy Brown. Heldt discusses his growth in his second year with the program, improvements in defensive communication, and lighthearted personal topics like the layout of his hometown (the "roundabout capital") and his custom Italian suits. Brown shares his insights on stepping into a primary leadership role, holding player-led meetings during the off-season, translating individual statistics into collective team success, and maintaining the necessary focus and intensity required to face top-tier opponents like LSU.

Transcript Host 1: Well, it's official, Tolos. It's official, Tolos. Clemson is on the clock. We've got Dabo Swinney—a conversation that we had with Dabo earlier today. That's coming up for you at 5:20. We'll be marrying that up with his tight end, Olsen Patt-Henry, at 5:20, so be right here in just about an hour. But let's talk Clemson defense. And a lot of people say, Cole, that that is going to be the strength of this team this year. If they're going to improve and get over on that 7 and 6 record that they finished the season with last year, then the defense is going to have to be a major part of it. And of course, week number one, that defense is going to have to be absolutely massive on the road at LSU. So let's talk to two of the guys that are basically the architects of this defense this year. Will Heldt, he is the defensive end, Cole. He's getting after the quarterback. And Sammy Brown, he is basically the quarterback of the defense. Let's talk to both of them right here. Host 2: Wire2Wire, Diesel and Cole Bryson live, ACC Kickoff Radio Row, sitting down next to the very large Will Heldt. Just sat down next to us. Will, it's your second season at Clemson, so you're obviously a leader on this team. What's it like as a transfer player who's bought into the system to then be able to lead transfer players who are coming in to buy into the system? Will Heldt: Yeah, I think being one of just a few transfers last year and maybe setting the tone for a few more guys transferring in this year is great. But yeah, bringing those guys up to speed, having had a year and a half under my belt now has been awesome. But yeah, year two under the scheme, excited about that. Host 2: Will, you know, I asked Sammy about this as well. Tom Allen's defense last year, you know, I don't know if it was you guys drinking through a fire hose at times in the offseason, just learning what he wanted to do. But this year, has it been more comfortable in year two of the offseason? And if so, can you elaborate on that? Will Heldt: Yeah, I think year two, comfortability in the scheme has been awesome. Just being able to communicate easier and play a little more fluid. Communication from the line to the backers to the back end is going to be a lot smoother. And then like you mentioned with the transfers coming in, just being able to bring those guys up to speed has been great. Host 1: Well, I always like to throw a curveball, not talk only sports. You're from Carmel, Indiana, the roundabout capital of the United States. Now, we started getting those in Greenville a couple of years ago, and people still haven't figured them out. So, for the uninitiated that are listening right now in Greenville, could you please tell people how to use roundabouts? Will Heldt: [Laughs] Yeah, you got to yield to the people that are in the roundabout. Uh, definitely had a few mistakes I've seen driving here in South Carolina, but yeah, I didn't expect you to bring up the roundabout capital of the world, but that's good. Host 1: Do you get annoyed at a stoplight? Will Heldt: Honestly, yeah, I do. [Laughs] I can't help but think about how efficient it would be if there was a roundabout, honestly. Host 2: So Will, Sammy and I were both talking. We think we talked more about hunting than we did football. What's your off-the-field—when Will Heldt's not thinking about football, what does Will Heldt do? Will Heldt: I think golfing or chilling at the lake. I think those are my go-tos. Host 2: What's your golf game like? Will Heldt: Not very good. [Laughs] Not very good. Host 2: So if I asked you if you play a draw or a fade, what would you say? Will Heldt: I would say draw, but I'm still not very good. I like to play though. Host 1: Talk about the challenges that you're going to face this year. Obviously, right out of the gate, LSU, they're a tough team, but you're a big dude and you're going to try to go through some big dudes. So tell us about that challenge. Will ...
