House Party
from whitski Hosted by whitski
Another outing from my pre-turntable days, the outcome of endless hours spent peering over my laptop and meticulously splicing tracks together, in order to make the mixes I wished I could accomplish using vinyl and a mixer. I was a few years into associating with a small scene of Austin DJs, many of whom introduced me to differing flavors of Deep House and Broken Beat, the latter being particularly en vogue via Merrick Brown's "Get Broke" weekly at local dancehole, Plush. At the same time, James Murphy's DFA records was heavily impressed upon the local dance community of the time, drawing a bridge between the Disco instrumentals of past decades and the squelchy, aggressive resurgence of Electro at the hands of acts like Simian Mobile Disco, Justice, Spank Rock and Diplo. Throw in some Viking Disco, and you have the mix you have here. You may note there seems to be a breathless rush to a finale in the last 15 or so minutes of the mix. This is an artifact of my being subject to the strictures set by the medium for transference at that time: CDRs only permitted up to 80 minutes of recorded material. As the name suggests, my intention was that this be played at any house parties I may attend. I'm not sure that ever came to pass. 1. EWF - Brazilian Rhyme 2. Fred Wesley - House Party 3.
