House passes permanent daylight saving bill; James takes listener opinions.
from The Charlie James Show Podcast
The program highlights a major legislative development as the House has passed a bill, the Sunshine Protection Act, to place the United States permanently on daylight saving time, pending Senate approval. Host Charlie James shares his own perspective, noting that his extensive past experience as a morning radio show host minimized the personal impact of time changes on his schedule. He invites audience feedback on the issue, leading to a live phone interaction with a caller named Neil from Sunnyview. Neil humorously points out a common misconception about the law, joking that shifting the clocks does not actually alter the physical length of the day or the movement of the sun. James continues to read various real-time text messages and comments from listeners advocating for either standard or daylight saving time based on their occupations and daily routines.

What this episode covers
Charlie James: All right. throughout my career there's been two issues that have really pitted me against my listening audience um for better or worse. Um one of them is driving in the left-hand lane. Not Auburn football, Gamecock football. Um um JJ weighing in there. Um the other issue is daylight savings time. I have, because of my experience and my work experience, um when I was doing morning radio for 30-something years, um daylight savings time never uh affected me. I got up at 3:00 in the morning. It didn't care if it was standard time or daylight savings time. 3:00 in the morning still dark. I go to bed at 9:00. I go to bed whether the sun's up or the sun's down. It doesn't matter, I go to bed. So, it never really affected me whether or not to switch uh switching the clock. I never saw a big deal for it. I really never did. So, when everybody, you know, twice a year, we always get all the complaints about, "Oh, I can't believe we have to do this. Why are we doing this?" Um I was like I I don't get it. I don't understand why people are so upset. But, I do understand that they are. Well, the House has now passed a bill that would put us permanently on daylight savings time. News Broadcaster: Is almost on your side. The House passing the Sunshine Protection Act, which is a bill that would make daylight saving time permanent and now heads to the Senate. And, if passed, Americans would no longer have a chance uh to change their clocks twice a year, but it would also allow states to opt out. President Trump has been pushing to get the legislation passed, writing in May, quote, "It's time that people can stop worrying about the clock. We are going with the far more popular alternative, saving daylight, which gives you a longer, brighter day. And who can be against that?" This is an easy one. Those are your headlines, guys. Charlie James: All right. So, I want to know what you think about this. Which one would you prefer? Because there's there's the daylight savings time people, there's the standard time people. Standard time people, they're like, "Oh, you can't do this." And I Listen, I don't understand. Here's what I want to Here's the one I'm for. Here's the one I'm for. What gives me more daylight in the morning? I want my daylight in the morning. And you know, that's when I get up early and go play golf, get around a quick round of golf in before I come to work, on occasion. So, which one do you guys prefer? Now, if you like to weigh in on this, 800-905-0989, um that was um in there. So, um I would love to know which one of you guys which one you think. I But, again, I've never thought it was a big deal. I never thought it was a hardship in any way. And now Now, what we're hearing, what we're hearing, "Charlie, I enjoy doing things after I get off work, so if I get off work at 4:00 and it's already dark, it's difficult for me to get anything accomplished." I I understand that as well. "Some nights, I get off work, get home a little after 7:00, I'm able to cut the grass before I go to bed." That's pretty good. I always like that. Um so, "Charlie, more daylight in the morning for me," one person said. Somebody wants standard time. "Charlie, I vote daylight savings time." Now, here's one of the things, um you just heard there in that little uh clip from Fox News. This this would allow states to opt out. Gosh, how different would the I mean What a mess would that cause with airline travel, with with all And the airlines, they're not really crazy about this thing, either. Let's go to uh Jeff in Hickory. Jeff, what do you think? Daylight savings time year-round or no? Jeff: This is Joe. Charlie James: Oh, Joe. I'm sorry. Yeah, what's up? All right. Joe: Hey, I'm I'm a farmer, Charlie, and I like the light uh daylight further into the night time. Charlie James: Okay, but but but All right, but So, let me ask you, Joe. Do you, as a farmer, is your day set around a clock, or is it set around when the sun comes up? Joe: W ...
