How Can You Know Your Faith Is Growing? | 2 Peter 1:8–11

Our text today is 2 Peter 1:8-11: For if these qualities are yours and are increasing, they keep you from being ineffective or unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. For whoever lacks these qualities is so nearsighted that he is blind, having forgotten that he was cleansed from his former sins. Therefore, brothers, be all the more diligent to confirm your calling and election, for if you practice these qualities you will never fall. For in this way there will be richly provided for you an entrance into the eternal kingdom of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. — 2 Peter 1:8-11 Peter has just described the seven qualities believers should pursue: virtue, knowledge, self-control, steadfastness, godliness, brotherly affection, and love. Now he explains why continued growth matters. When these qualities are present and growing, our faith becomes effective and fruitful. Peter does not expect instant perfection, but he does expect progress. The question is not, "Have I arrived?" The question is, "Am I growing?" Peter warns that the believer who neglects these qualities becomes nearsighted and forgetful. Spiritual stagnation affects our vision. We lose sight of what Christ has done, forget that we have been cleansed from sin, and begin living as though grace has made little difference. It is easy to confuse familiarity with maturity. You see, I may know the right words, remember all the lessons, and recognize the scripture references, but that does not mean I am living it. Sometimes I need to ask myself: Is this truth actually changing me? Peter tells us to be diligent in confirming our calling and election. He is not saying that our effort earns salvation. He is saying that a growing life provides visible evidence of God's work within us. Remember it this way: Fruit does not create the root. Fruit reveals that the root is alive. A fruitful Christian is not someone who never struggles or fails. It is someone who keeps returning to Christ, keeps practicing obedience, and keeps allowing grace to shape his character. Do not measure growth only by how much you know. Look for increasing patience, stronger self-control, deeper love, greater endurance, and quicker repentance. You may not be where you want to be yet. But by God's grace, you do not have to remain where you are. Keep growing. A faith that is practiced becomes a faith that is steady, fruitful, and difficult to deceive. ASK THIS: Where can you see genuine spiritual growth in your life? Which quality from Peter's list has stopped increasing? Are you measuring maturity by what you know or by how truth is changing the way you live?
