I'm Carrie Dan. You don't have to be a political scientist to know that President Donald Trump has fundamentally changed a lot about the Republican Party. After all, when other Republican candidates back in 2016 were running on fiscal discipline and belt tightening, Trump ran on preserving entitlements, and he won. When other GOP candidates were running on America's global leadership and dominance in the world, Trump ran on ending American wars and kind of saying get lost to the UN and to many American allies.

And he won. And when other GOP candidates were running on how their personal faith and morality would be the best sign of what their policies would be in the White House, Trump pretty much asked voters to ignore his personal behavior as long as they liked what they saw on the policy scoreboard. And yeah, he won. Now though there is a force that poised to reshape American political parties once again And it even bigger than Trump A lot bigger The Republican Senate yesterday overwhelmingly passed a coronavirus aid bill that included a huge expansion of paid leave And the same Republican Senate is now in the course of figuring out a colossal aid bill that would just send cash to all Americans.

The Republican president, President Trump, is now also proposing that the United States maybe should take on an equity stake in certain companies that receive federal help during the recovery. Now, I covered the rise of the Tea Party quite a bit back in 2010 or so. And those are all things that if President Barack Obama had supported them would have caused a very different response from Republicans. But of course, we're in a much, much different, unforeseen and unpredictable situation now.

And it's worth noting that to some extent, fiscal conservatism, at least when it's targeted to one part of the economy, is always the most in vogue in the party that's out of power. But still, all of this is just really, really striking. As we wrote in NBC's first read newsletter this morning, it might be the end of the era of small governments for the foreseeable future. And in fairness, we may have kind of been drifting that way anyway.

We often ask in our NBC News, Wall Street Journal polls whether or not government should do more or less. And as recently as last summer, a majority, 55 percent, said the government should be doing more to solve problems and help people. That's 10 points higher than it was in 2010. Now, I am loathe to predict polling results for the future.

But if I had to bet, I would say that the share of Americans who want government to do more is probably going to keep going up as this crisis progresses. That's all it for us.
