How did Judea become Palestine? The Bar Kokhba Revolt (132–136 CE)

from Veritas · host Truth

The Bar Kokhba Revolt (132–136 CE) was the last major and decisive revolt of the Jews of the Land of Israel against the rule of the Roman Empire, during the reign of Emperor Hadrian. This military conflict closed the chapter of armed resistance to Roman rule and brought an end to Jewish sovereignty in the Land of Israel for some two thousand years.Following the suppression of the Bar Kokhba Revolt, the Roman Emperor Hadrian changed the name of the province from "Judea" (Judea) to "Syria Palaestina".The new name was based on the name of the biblical Philistines, who had previously ruled the coastal regions of the country. The main purpose of this punitive measure was to sever the historical and national connection between the Jewish people and the Land of Israel, and to erase the memory of JudahThis is the only case in the history of the Roman Empire in which the name of a province was changed as a direct result of a revoltThere is also a belief that the specific name "Syria Palaestina" was suggested by the non-Jewish population of the region, who resented that the name of the province was completely identified with the Jewish people.
