How Do Dogs Use Their Tails?

from News For Kids · host ICRT

Who's a good boy? You're a good boy! This dog looks happy. He is wagging his tail. But I wonder… Why do dogs have a tail? What does the tail do? Recently, some scientists in Germany asked the same question. They wanted to know what a dog's tail is for. They saw how other animals use their tails. Lizards use their tails to jump. Cats use their tails to turn quickly. In other words, many animals use their tails to help them move. After that, the scientists came up with an idea. The scientists thought dogs may also use their tails this way. Next, they had to see if their idea was right. To do this, the scientists studied many dogs to see how they move. Then they used what they learned to make a computer model of a dog. They studied the computer model, and in the end they had an answer… Their idea was wrong! Dogs' tails do not help dogs move. So why do dogs have tails? Maybe dogs use their tails to show their feelings. The scientists are still not sure, but now they are closer to finding out! ________________________________ Vocabulary 狗尾巴應該有多重用途,科學家正在研究。 1. question 問題 A student of mine asked me a question. She said, "What are jokes for?" 2. come up with 提出,想出來 That's a very good question! So what answer did you come up with? 3. find out 尋找 Well, I said to her, "Let's find out." Then I told her a joke. And she laughed so hard that in the end she needed to sit down. Now she knows what jokes are for. She does. This Impact Studios production is a collaboration with the Governor family, UTS Faculty of Law and Jumbunna Institute for Indigenous Education and Research. The Last Outlaws teamKatherine Biber - UTS Law Professor and Chief InvestigatorAunty Loretta Parsley - Great-granddaughter of Jimmy Governor and the Governor Family Historian Leroy Parsons - Governor descendant, Narrator and Co-WriterKaitlyn Sawrey - Host, Writer and Senior ProducerFrank Lopez - Writer, Managing Next Generation Energy Systems Cambridge University Background Stakeholders working with energy systems have to make complex decisions formulated from risk-based assessments about the future. The move towards more renewables in our energy systems complicates matters even further, requiring the development of an integrated power grid and continuous and steady transformation of the UK power system. Network flows must be managed reliably under uncertain demands, uncertain supply, emerging network technologies and possible failures and, further, prices in related markets can be highly volatile. Mathematicians working with engineers and economists, can make significant contributions to address such issues, by helping to develop fit-for-purpose models for next generation energy systems. These interdisciplinary approaches are looking to address a range of associated problems, including modelling, prediction, simulation, control, market and mechanism design and optimisation.
