How do I talk to conservatives about social issues like abortion?

How are we supposed to defend our beliefs as Christian libertarians when it comes to social issues like abortion or gay marriage? Why do so many people look to the state for a moral compass or solutions when it comes to these social issues when the state has continually failed and exasperated these problems? How do we show the ineptitude of the state in social issues?
