When there is enough money, everything is good, and with our horses, if there is enough energy, the horses remain healthy and even thrive. At a cell level, every cell has a function that requires energy: muscles contracting or the brain thinking. In addition, cells also have an energy budget for growth, maintenance, and repair. Finally, the products of metabolism (reactive oxygen species, or ROS) need to be removed, which also incurs a cost. Any added "resistance" to the flow of energy in the cell, such as inflammation and stress, reduces the available energy for the cell's function and maintenance.
