What is hormone suppression in the context of anabolic-androgenic steroid (AAS) use?Hormone suppression refers to the disruption and reduction of the body's natural production of hormones, particularly testosterone, as a consequence of using exogenous (externally introduced) anabolic-androgenic steroids. When an individual introduces synthetic hormones into their system, the body senses the elevated hormone levels and, through negative feedback mechanisms, signals the hypothalamus and pituitary gland to decrease or cease their production of gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) and luteinizing hormone (LH), respectively. LH is crucial for stimulating the testes (in males) to produce testosterone.Q2. How do exogenous steroids trigger hormone suppression?The presence of high levels of exogenous androgens in the bloodstream signals the brain that sufficient androgen is available. This triggers a negative feedback loop. Specifically, the hypothalamus reduces the secretion of GnRH.
