Dr. Jennifer Tsai’s career does not fit neatly into the traditional definition of optometry. She is an optometrist, practice owner, content creator, and entrepreneur who has built a personal brand reaching hundreds of thousands of followers while developing two practices in New York City. But the polished version seen today was built through experimentation, setbacks, and a willingness to question what an optometry practice could become. In a conversation with Tarrence Lackran, Dr. Tsai shares how working nearly 10 jobs after graduation, opening a practice during the pandemic, and exploring dry eye and aesthetics helped shape a career that extends far beyond the exam room. Topics Covered : Finding a Path Through Failure Building Line of Sight Through Uncertainty Expanding What an Optometry Practice Can Be Personal Brand With a Purpose The Courage to Start Finding a Path Through Failure Dr. Tsai did not graduate with a perfectly mapped-out career. After moving to New York, she worked at nine or 10 different practices during her first year, sometimes working six or seven days a week. Rather than viewing those experiences as a lack of direction, she used them to understand what type of practice and career she actually wanted. Eventually, the experimentation gave way to focus. To build the life she wanted in New York, she realized she needed to choose a direction and commit to it. Building Line of Sight Through Uncertainty That commitment was tested almost immediately when Dr. Tsai began building Line of Sight. She signed the lease in December 2019, only to have construction halted months later by the pandemic. Unable to see patients, she pivoted toward TikTok and YouTube, using content to begin building an audience before the practice could fully open. What could have stopped the business instead became part of its foundation. As she explained, success requires both starting and staying committed: “It takes both resilience and grit to push one thing through.” Expanding What an Optometry Practice Can Be Dr. Tsai’s own experience with dry eye helped push her toward a broader model of eye care. After treating advanced dry eye disease early in her career, she began researching ways to intervene differently. That interest eventually expanded into IPL, radiofrequency, aesthetics, under-eye treatments, and preventive eye wellness. Her approach ultimately led to an organic partnership with Equinox Hotel, where Line of Sight provides dry eye and aesthetic treatments within its spa environment. The underlying question has remained simple: Why not? Rather than assuming optometry must remain limited to conventional eye exams, Dr. Tsai believes doctors can explore new services when they have the expertise and those services meaningfully benefit patients. Personal Brand With a Purpose With an estimated 600,000 to 700,000 followers across social media, Dr. Tsai has also challenged expectations of what an optometrist can look like online. Her visibility has not always been comfortable. Early in her social media career, she received comments questioning whether she actually worked or why a female doctor would wear makeup. Instead of changing how she presented herself, she continued showing up authentically—as a do...
