How Jamila Rizvi lives with a broken brain

from KICPod · host LiSTNR

When Jamila was 31 she was diagnosed with craniopharyngioma - a rare brain tumour that would see Jamila undergo surgeries, radiation, scans, hospital stays and everything in between. Jamila has written about her experience of it all in the book ‘Broken Brains’ - which she co-authored with writer & podcaster Rosie Waterland who writes about her experience of trauma brought on by a childhood of abuse and neglect. In this episode, Laura & Jamila discuss the surprising similarities between Jamila and Rosie’s broken brains, and how society treats physical illness very differently to mental illness. Jamila shares about the reality of her own brain - including asking for help, her husband becoming her carer, her relationship to work, and the unfairness of being sick and young.
