How many people are raped and don't know about it?

from The Forum@8 Hosted by SAfm

On the Forum@8 this morning, we look at the so-called 'rape culture' here in South Africa. It is a phenomenon that's become prevalent in a country with indigenous cultures, that otherwise has had high sense of morality, family orientation and respectful behaviour. Now, the Police crime statistics released in September last year, stated that in 2014/2015 there were almost 54-000 sexual offences reported. This translated into 147 cases per day. But, the organisation " Rape Crisis', has said the difficulty with using SAPS statistics is that many incidents of rape go unreported. Some studies also estimated that if all rapes were reported, the figures could be as high 482 000 for the country. The reasons many incidents of rape go unreported, include fear of retaliation or intimidation by the perpetrator; and the fact that the offender is often known to the victim, and frequently a member of the victim's family. Sakina speaks to the Chairperson of the Commission for Gender Equality Mfanozelwe Shozi and Gender Rights Activist Lisa Vetten
