Okay, Monday's a really strange day because today is President's Day. And I'm old and I remember President's Day but not being President's Day. So I had to go look it up on the internet so I guess we'll talk a little bit about that today on the daily grateful and why we should be grateful for the history of President's Day. Oh, this is going to be a great one, isn't it?
Did you know that President's Day started out as Washington's birthday? But you know, then somewhere along the 50s or 60s or something, all of these official birthdays, and by the way his birthday was February 22nd, yet today is President's Day. And it used to be Washington's birthday day. But somewhere in the 60s or something they decided that somebody decided, I don't know who decided, that we needed to have three-day weekends.
So you know, nothing wrong with that I guess. Did I tell you that this is a daily grateful and I'm Michael Gross? I'm not sure. I'm just in one of those really strange moods today.
This is going to be a very busy week for me and I'm not looking forward to parts of it. Parts of it I am, but parts of it I'm not. But it's going to be a busy week. So, you know, it was kind of like an unofficial celebration that took place across the country for the 19th century and then in 1832 they said, nope, we're going to make this into one of those national holidays where the banks get closed and the post office gets closed and all of those things get closed.
Anyway, somewhere around 1971 according to the interwebs here, I'm looking at the interwebs. They said, well, let's make this a uniform Monday holiday act and they're going to start moving all of these strange holidays onto Mondays. So, and then while the official name stayed Washington's birthday, the informal term, President's Day gained popularity, especially due to marketing campaigns in the 1980s. Somebody figured out how to sell crap because it was going to be President's Day.
You know, your President's Day furniture sale, which, you know, a few things tick me off, especially on Memorial Day. I look at Memorial Day as a sacred holiday, okay, and it's not a holiday. It's a day of remembrance for our heroes that died for our country in war. I take this very, very seriously.
I do. And if you knew me, you would know that I do. And everybody that knows me knows that I take that very seriously. Yet, I'm telling you, there's furniture sales.
There's clothing sales. There's, you know, Memorial Day, Baba sales. And I hate that. That just pisses me off.
And they're doing the same thing for all the other holidays. Like today, it's President's Day. And you turn on the television and they're in there talking about, you know, President's Day sale at Matter Brothers furniture. What?
You know, come on, stop it. Okay, can't we honor our President's, or, you know, poor President Washington, our very first President, get screwed out of the holiday for marketing purposes. Wow. But, you know what, there's a lot of things to be worried about in the world.
And I guess this just isn't one of them. You know what I'm grateful for? I'm grateful that we had a three-day weekend, I guess. I'm grateful that families can spend this time together.
I am grateful that I can come in here every day and talk to you folks for a few minutes. That makes me very, very happy. So, and I'm not grateful that my cat, the youngest cat, just jumped up on the back of my chair and dug his claws into my shoulder in order to get up here. He's up here right around my neck.
I'm not grateful for that. Kitty, what are you doing? Oh man. I usually closed the door when I'm doing this, but I didn't close the door today because nobody's home.
So I figured I would just let him, you know, no. Now she's up on the dresser. She's going to knock down a painting that I have on the dresser and you're going to hear it. I can just tell.
I can absolutely just tell. Oh well, tomorrow is yet another day. Tomorrow is Tuesday. But today is Monday.
Monday, Monday. Just another manic Monday. Yeah. All these Monday songs.
