How One Teacher is Transforming Education with Hands-On Learning

from Rooted & Rising · host Lamisa Wellness Collective

On this episode of Rooted & Rising, I am joined by Quincy Cornelius, a teacher and founder of the non-profit organization, Classroom Crops, to discuss his journey from teaching algebra to horticulture, the importance of engaging students in learning about food and health, maintaining classroom structure, being a role model for students, overcoming language barriers and handling the emotional weight of developing, conscious beings.Classroom Crops is a program focused on engaging students through lessons of horticulture, design & building, cultivating, analyzing, and developing human and botanical life.Whenever an opportunity in life presents itself into something that you feel strongly about, you need to weigh it out, pray on it, and step out on faith and take your best step forward.During the middle of the school year, Quincy began teaching at a new school to pursue Classroom Crops full-time, following his dreams for his organization, but leaving behind the students who were a part of his journey. We discussed how difficult the decision was, but how redirection was imminent, and how he’s managing Classroom Crops from two completely different states. As he expands his knowledge and talents in horticulture, he’s seeing how receptive the students and community are to contributing to the expansion of botanical life.Quincy’s ultimate goal as a teacher is to model continuous learning and adaptability in education, and he is making unprecedented strides.Check out Classroom Crops here to learn more about the organization and how to get involved.
