Travis Rieder, Ph.D., a bioethicist at Johns Hopkin Medical School, speaks to the problems he had in getting proper medical guidance to stop his pain medicine use after personally suffering a brutal accident. He is candid and open to the benefits and concerns of opioid use, acute versus chronic pain, and the need to educate prescribers how to properly start, and how to properly discontinue, pain medications.
