How Prison Changed My Life | Tamika Callahan & Pastor Tamara Gordon | Season 2 | Episode 2

from Tea With My Sweet Gratitude · host Tea with my sweet gratitude

Tamika Callahan never imagined that her life would lead her behind the heavy doors of York Correctional Institution—not once, but twice. In this powerful episode of Tea with My Sweet Gratitude (Season 2, Episode 2), she sits down with Pastor Tamara Gordon to share her journey through incarceration, anger, motherhood, loss, faith, and transformation.Tamika opens up about growing up in Stamford, Connecticut, where childhood was full of community, freedom, and innocence. But as she got older, fights, pressure, and the need to defend herself pushed her into situations that would change her life forever. She shares how her first incarceration—from 2006 to 2008 for assault—was a wake-up call. Inside York CI she went to school, earned her culinary arts certificate, joined the choir, and found God in a deeper way. She even had a vision in prison that later came true. She promised herself she would never return, and tried to forget everything—even her inmate number. But life took another painful turn. In 2018, after a fight at a Sweet 16 party, she was sentenced again—this time leaving behind her 9-month-old baby and 8-year-old son. At the same time, she lost her beloved cousin to diabetes. The grief broke her. She admits she even questioned God. She isolated herself, cried in silence, and struggled to accept being separated from her children and her home once again.Inside York CI, she encountered fights, fear, sisterhood, and unexpected love. She remembers the intense incident in Room 10, where a fight spilled into the cell as Pastor Tamara was sleeping with her Bible next to her. From the chaos of the tier, to the open door that never locked because women constantly came to her for comfort, Tamara became a spiritual anchor in the prison—and Tamika watched, learned, and grew.Through prayer, counseling others, and witnessing the invisible battles women face every day, Tamika discovered a deeper purpose. She learned that not everything requires a physical reaction—that words carry power, and wisdom is stronger than anger. After leaving prison, she now teaches her children the lessons she learned inside:• defend yourself with words, not violence• think before you react• speak life into others• choose your battles wisely• consequences are real, and one moment can change everythingTamika shares honestly that sometimes she felt more love inside the prison walls than outside. The “walkway sisters,” the choir, the prayers, the late-night talks—those bonds helped shape the woman she is today. This episode is more than a prison story—it is a journey of breaking, surrendering, healing, and rising again. If you have ever struggled with anger, trauma, grief, or regret, Tamika’s story will give you hope, strength, and perspective. Her life is proof that even in the darkest places, transformation can happen—and God can still speak.Watch to discover how speaking your truth and embracing vulnerability can uplift and inspire others.SUBSCRIBE & LEAVE A REVIEWYoutube Channel: @teawithmysweetgratitude🍎Apple Podcasts: https://podcasts.apple.com/jm/podcast/tea-with-my-sweet-gratitude/id1770792518🎧Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/3OWkwx6X67kJm5ci8EJ8Od?si=1589d46e4ee5475aFOLLOW US ON SOCIAL MEDIAInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/teawithmysweetgratitude_?igsh=MW1ldXZocmN2Y2Uwdw==Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/share/18STDQjGxn/?mibextid=wwXIfrTikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@teawithmysweetgratitude?_t=ZM-8uK248ulMF4&_r=1 CREDITSExecutive Producer: Pastor Tamara GordonProducer: Pastor Tamara GordonEditor: Allista BlagroveJingle provided by: McDove Music and OzariiSponsored by: My Sweet Gratitude Cosmeticshttp://mysweetgratitude.comSponsored by: Digital Strategist & Creative: Josh Gorero https://www.instagram.com/josh.goreroCONNECT WITH OUR GUEST Tiktok: https://www.tiktok.com/@touchnotmyanointed13#prisonstorytime #secondchances #TeaWithMySweetGratitude #womeninprison #healingjourney
