How Should Horror Hook? The Impact Of Junji Ito

from Parrish Passages Podcast · host Samantha Parrish

Hello listeners, welcome to the third episode, all about the man who makes the macabre manga, Junji Ito. This is going to be a different type of episode with the way it’s presented to make the commentary, about horror and using Junji Ito as examples as opposed to making an episode that was originally going to be about all his works, I opted for a strategic commentary approach. In the anticipation for Junji Ito’s anime adaptation of Uzumaki, let’s take a look at how horror is changed because of Junji Ito. If you haven’t heard of him, then you’re about to have your whole perspective on horror changed because of him. Junji Ito changed the way I look at the horror genre now, and he’s changed me as a writer to go for the unexpected and think of something that people never think about. His mangas have made such an impact on me that, I’ve even referenced his works in my own book. I did make an error in this with the set up about Junji Ito’s origin, when I mentioned about how he had to go downstairs, I failed to include “to the basement”. It was too late before I could fix this part, that’s my bad, I’m human, we make these minor mistakes and that’s Ok, I’ll do better next time. Another error I made was my point about the scariest depiction which is certain figures in HISTORY that are presented by an actor (Kind of like Zac Efron playing Ted Bundy for example). I didn’t elaborate on this part very well and I take the hit for it. Thanks for understanding, I’ll get better about pointing out my points~So did you like the podcast and want more junji ito commentary from yours truly, bing ba-da boom!
