How Should We Pray? | Fervent Prayer | Acts 12:1-17 | w/ Joshua Sanders
from Christ Community Church (Brazil, IN) · host mycccbrazil
How many of you have ever prayed out of pure desperation? Maybe it was when your car wouldn’t start, and you had to be somewhere important, or when the washing machine broke down right in the middle of a laundry day crisis. You try everything you can think of to fix it—turning it off and back on, checking connections, maybe even giving it a good kick—but nothing works. Finally, in desperation, you throw up a prayer, “Lord, please let this thing start.” I’ve been there! Several times! Or for the students, maybe it was that big exam you didn’t study for. You sit down, realize you’re totally unprepared, and silently whisper, “God, please help me get through this!” We’ve all had those moments where we reach the end of our rope and throw up a last-minute prayer. But let’s be honest—those quick, desperate prayers, whether for a broken car or an exam, aren’t always the most sincere. Sometimes, they’re more like last-ditch efforts. In this sermon, we picked back up our verse by verse expedition through the book of Acts. We kick off Acts 12 and look at the first seventeen verses. In this passage, we see a different kind of desperation—a deep, sincere, persistent cry to God in the face of impossible circumstances. In this passage, the early church found themselves in a truly desperate situation. We will see King Herod kill James, one of their leaders, and then we will see King Herod arrest Peter who will then await execution. The church could have panicked. They could have given up hope. But we will see that instead of panicking, they gathered together and prayed fervently, desperately seeking God’s intervention. As we dive into Acts 12:1-17, we see how God responded to their desperate prayers, and how He still moves powerfully through persistent, passionate, and sincere prayer today.
