How to Choose Between Duke and Purdue MEM in 2026 - w/ Fiza & Bhushan

from Ready Set Do · host Naman Pandey

Picking between Duke MEM and Purdue MEM is the kind of decision where Reddit threads contradict themselves. Program brochures sound identical. And the people who actually survived it have already moved on with their lives. So I tracked two of them down. Fiza Patel finished Duke MEM in 2025 and works as an Associate Product Specialist at STIHL. Bhushan Chougule is still in Purdue MEM and co-oping at Tesla right now. Same degree, opposite schools, very different price tags. I asked them every question the admissions websites refuse to answer. A few things surprised me. Purdue's 12-month co-op used to be the headline reason people picked it over Duke. That moat is gone. Duke and other MEM programs run co-ops too now, so if you're choosing Purdue purely for the co-op, you might want to slow down. Then there's the tuition gap. Duke costs roughly twice what Purdue does. Worth it? I asked Bhushan directly — the guy who picked the cheaper school and landed at Tesla. His answer is more nuanced than the "prestige doesn't matter" takes you'll see on LinkedIn. (And yes, we get into the Research Triangle vs Midwest job market thing, because location matters more than the rankings will admit.) Honestly, the part I'm most proud of is the mistake I own on tape. I picked my own MEM program for reasons that turned out to be wrong, and I walk through exactly what I'd tell my pre-application self now. If you're an Indian student staring down an F1 visa, a CPT co-op decision, and six figures of risk, this part is for you. (yes) We also unpack how MEM is different from an MBA, MIM, MQM, or a Masters in Product Management — and which one you actually want based on your career direction. Whether the school name on your resume matters for MEM jobs, or whether the cohort quality and career fair access matter more. What Duke Pratt's cohort actually feels like vs Purdue's, including staff support and the reality of internship conversion. Why "is MEM worth it" is the wrong question, and what you should be asking instead. If you're sitting on MEM 2026 admits, deposits due, and parents asking questions you don't have answers to — this is the conversation I wish someone had recorded for me before I applied.
