How To Dance

Our High Schoolers just got back from a three-day mystery trip, and I applaud their courage and eagerness. They are incredible! It's no easy thing to enter three days without a phone, without a plan, no idea where we're going or what we're doing until we're actually doing it. When's the last time you had a moment like that? When you were three years old maybe? It's a rather terrifying and counter cultural way to live. All our high schoolers were left with was the present moment, the present place, and the present people around them. The power of the mystery trip is you have to be present, and that's where God is at work. It was such gladness for me to see our students enjoy that.A mystery trip, much like a mystery moment in life, is disorienting. It's a liminal space where we've left one room but haven't yet entered the next. We've left stability, and we're floating over the threshold waiting to move forward. This time of disorientation is waiting for not just a return to the old way, but a new orientation, a new perspective, a new way of living. The Psalm we're looking at this Sunday, Psalm 30, is all about the gratuitous gladness found when we've gone through disorientation and God has given us new life on the other side. And this new life, as well as this Sunday's sermon, might just include some dancing.
