from The Working Triathlete Podcast · host Derek Stone & Conrad Goeringer

In episode 2 in our series with Dr. Jim Taylor, we discuss the frame work how we should be mentally approaching a race all the way through the finish.  Goal #1 (before race): Total Preparation Just before start, you can say “I’m as prepared as I can be.” Goal #2 (during race): Bring It! Definition: giving your fullest focus, intensity, and effort consistently. Goal #3 (after race): No Regrets Leave it all out on the course. Pre-race Preparation: Monitor physical intensity. Do pre-race routine. Do mental imagery. Breathe. Review race plan. Focus based on focus style. Race Start: Focus on technique and pace. Stay within yourself. Be disciplined (don’t get caught up in mad rush). Middle of Race: Monitor physiology and adjust pace. Stay positive and aggressive. Finish Strong Have the fitness to finish strong. Practice finishing strong in training. Fuel well. Recognize there is still fuel in the tank. Focus on breathing. Have an aggressive mindset. Use power words. Smile.
