How to Know If Your Child Is Learning Without Tests or Grades

from Empowered HomeFront · host Eric W Howell

How do you know if your child is actually learning without tests, grades, or report cards? For many homeschool parents, that's one of the hardest parts of stepping away from traditional school. If there isn't a test or a grade, how do you know the knowledge actually stuck? In this episode, we explore a different way to assess learning in homeschool by looking at whether a child can actually use what they've learned, not simply remember the right answer on a test. You'll learn about three simple ways to assess understanding: Teach-back: Ask your child to explain a concept as if they're teaching it to someone who knows nothing about it. The week-later check: Bring the lesson up again days later to see if the knowledge made it beyond short-term memory. The new situation method: Ask your child to connect what they learned to a new, real-world situation. We also explore why mistakes are data, not failures. Instead of immediately correcting your child, you can listen to their reasoning and ask questions like, "Tell me more about that" or "What makes you think that?" The goal isn't simply to find the right or wrong answer. It's to understand how your child is thinking, what they understand, and where they may need another pass. This approach changes the way you can think about assessment in homeschooling and shows why learning doesn't have to look like traditional school to be effective. When you focus on whether your child can actually understand, explain, retain, and use what they're learning, assessment doesn't have to become another separate block of schoolwork. Your child's mistakes aren't failures. They're data.
