How to Leave the Trump Cult

from The Lucas Bean Show · host Lucas Bean

When Your Family Member is in a Cult: Here’s What Actually WorksI’ve watched people I love disappear into the MAGA cult.Good people. People I never thought would defend the indefensible. And I did what everyone does: I argued. I sent articles. I fact-checked them in real time. I got frustrated, then desperate, then I gave up.Nothing worked. So I stopped guessing and started researching actual cult deprogramming. Not to mock anyone, to understand what gets people out. Here’s what I learned. And it’s not what you want to hear. The Truth: Most Won’t LeaveLet me be clear about this upfront. Most people in the MAGA cult will not leave. Not because they’re stupid. Because leaving costs too much. They’ve spent years defending Trump. They’ve destroyed relationships. They’ve said things they can’t take back. Some participated in January 6th and are facing potential legal consequences. For them, admitting they were wrong means losing everything - their identity, their community, and in some cases, their freedom. You can’t save most of them. Accept that now.But some are starting to doubt. The ones who watched federal agents kill protesters and couldn’t defend it.The ones who see what’s happening and feel sick. For those people - and only those people - here’s what might work.1. Stop Arguing (Seriously, Just Stop)I know you want to send them that perfect article. The one with all the proof.Don’t.Facts don’t work on cult members. This isn’t about policy or logic. It’s about identity. When you attack Trump, their brain doesn’t hear “this politician is corrupt.” It hears “you’re stupid for believing him.”That’s identity fusion - when someone’s self-worth becomes fused with a leader or movement.Criticizing the leader feels like a personal attack. So they defend harder. And every argument you have pushes them deeper into the cult.If you want any shot at reaching them, stop trying to prove them wrong.Just stop.2. Stay Connected (But Don’t Destroy Yourself)The cult survives on isolation. The more you cut them off, the more the cult becomes their entire world.I know they’re saying horrible things. I know it’s exhausting and infuriating. But if you completely abandon them, the cult wins. However, and this is critical, you don’t have to sacrifice yourself.Staying connected doesn’t mean:* Tolerating abuse* Accepting hate speech* Letting your mental health collapse* Being their emotional punching bagYou can keep a door open without standing in it getting hurt.Sometimes the healthiest thing you can say is:“I’m here if you ever want to talk about this. But I can’t keep having these conversations right now.”That’s not abandonment. That’s setting a boundary so you survive this.3. Be the Person Who Won’t Say “I Told You So”Here’s what terrifies them about leaving:The shame.Years of everyone saying “we told you so.” Every friend they argued with getting to be right. Every family member getting to pile on.That shame keeps them trapped more than anything else.If you want any chance of them reaching out when they start to doubt, you have to be the person who won’t rub it in their face. The person who says “I’m glad you’re seeing it now” instead of “I was right all along.”Can you do that?Because let me be honest - after watching them defend protesters being killed, that’s incredibly hard.If you can’t do it, that’s okay. You’re not a bad person. But then you’re not the person who can help them leave. Someone else might be.4. Ask Questions (Don’t Expect Answers)You can’t argue them out. But you can plant seeds of doubt.Instead of making statements, ask gentle questions:“Do you think federal agents should kill protesters?”“Is that what you signed up for when you supported Trump?”“Does this feel right to you?”Don’t tell them what to think. Ask them what they think.Let the cognitive dissonance do the work. Most won’t answer honestly. Most will deflect or attack you for asking. But some will start to wonder. Some part of their brain will register the question and start working on it.That’s all you can do. Plant the seed and walk away.5. Understand What Leaving Actually CostsLeaving a cult isn’t like changing your favorite restaurant. It’s an identity collapse. They have to admit they were wrong about everything. They have to face what they supported and defended. They have to lose the only community where they felt like they mattered. The friendships destroyed. The family dinners ruined. The things they posted online that will follow them forever. They’ll replay all of it and hate themselves. And here’s the part nobody talks about:Some of them literally can’t leave without facing criminal charges. If they were at January 6th, leaving means admitting to federal crimes. If they participated in harassment campaigns, they’re legally exposed. If they made threats, they could face consequences. Those people will never leave. The cost is prison. For everyone else, the cost is still enormous.Your job isn’t to minimize that cost. Your job is to understand why they might not be ready yet - or ever.6. Help Them Replace What They’ll LoseWhen someone leaves a cult, they lose their entire community. The rallies. The group chats. The shared purpose. The feeling of belonging. If they don’t replace that with something else, the loneliness will pull them back in.If they ever do reach out, help them:* Reconnect with old friends* Find new groups to join* Volunteer somewhere* Build a new communityIt doesn’t have to be political. They just need people and a reason to show up.Fill that space before the cult does.7. Know When to Walk AwaySome people can’t leave right now. Or ever.Legal exposure. Public actions they can’t undo. Relationships they’d destroy. An identity so fused with MAGA they’d rather die than admit they were wrong. And you are not required to wait for them. You are not required to destroy yourself hoping they wake up.People don’t leave cults because someone drags them out. They leave when staying becomes more painful than leaving.Your job isn’t to force that moment.Your job is to protect yourself and be available if that moment comes. If it never does, that’s not your failure. The Ones Who Might Make It OutThe only people who leave are the ones who:* Haven’t committed crimes that would destroy their lives if admitted* Still have some doubt - some part of them knows it’s wrong* Have at least one person they can turn to who won’t annihilate them with shameThat’s a very small group. Most won’t make it.The ones who do will need somewhere safe to land.Be that place if you can.But don’t burn yourself out trying to save people who aren’t ready to leave. What You Can Actually DoBe available if they reach out.Don’t argue with them.Protect your mental health first.Set boundaries that keep you safe. And accept that you probably can’t save them. That’s the honest version. We’re not saving most of these people. They’re too far in.The best we can do is survive this ourselves and be ready for the few who start to doubt. And make damn sure the cult doesn’t take democracy down with them. That’s it.That’s all we can do.
