Jesus assured us that forgiveness is a continuing event when He taught that we should forgive our brother 77 times (Matt 18:22) and even 7 times in one day if he repents (Lk 17:4). He offers us this same forgiveness which He expects from us in the sacrament of Confession. In fact, He does so more generously than any mere human person could. His abundant mercy is a reason for being more sorry for our sins, not less sorry.
