How to make sense of Court Cards (kings) beyond the "traditional tarot meanings"

So, you are reading for a client (or a friend, relative, someone at a party . . .) and a king shows up in the middle of your spread, much like a giant boulder appearing in the middle of the road as you are driving late at night. What do you do?
