How to Read a Garlic Supplement Label in 60 Seconds
from The Sunny Side by SOLEY · host SOLEY
Most people read a supplement label in exactly the wrong order: biggest number on the front first, small print on the back last. Reverse it and the same bottle tells you a different story. This episode gives the order. Serving size first, always, because every other figure on a Supplement Facts panel is expressed per serving — and a bottle whose serving is three or four capsules empties that much faster than a shopper assumes, without anyone technically lying. Then plant and part: garlic bulb, hawthorn fruit, beetroot root. Hawthorn berry and hawthorn leaf are both hawthorn, they are not the same material, and a label that never says which has left a gap. Then amounts, one per ingredient, rather than a pooled blend total that makes per-ingredient quantities unknowable. Then warnings, which tell you who the maker thinks could get into trouble. Then the FDA disclaimer — and the tell worth noticing is a bottle making enormous promises with no disclaimer on it. Cathy calls out the obvious problem: five lines and arithmetic is not sixty seconds. Rupert concedes and gives the aisle version. What is a serving? Is there a number beside the ingredient you came for? If either answer is missing, put it back. Per the manufacturer's technical data sheet, a serving of SOLEY Aged Garlic Complex is 2 capsules containing 500 mg of aged garlic extract from the bulb, 200 mg of hawthorn berry from the fruit and 100 mg of beetroot from the root, with 120 capsules in a bottle. SOLEY Aged Garlic Complex supports heart health. It supports healthy circulation. It supports healthy blood flow. It provides antioxidant support.
