You need the plain form together with といっていました to say "He/She said that". <Example Sentences> さとうさん は あした きょうと に いく といっていました。 Mr. Sato said that he would go to Kyoto tomorrow. さとうさん は ハンバーガー が すきだ といっていました。 Mr. Sato said that he liked a hamburger. メアリーさん は アメリカじん ではない といっていました。 Mary said that she was not an American. * Progressive expression "といっていました" indicates that you were actually listening to someone's utterance at the site.
