How to Separate Self-Worth From Achievement
from The YLF Experience Podcast · host Daryl Perry
Your worth is not tied to how hard you work, how much you accomplish, or whether things turn out the way you hoped. In this episode, I talk about the difference between taking pride in your effort and allowing effort to become the thing that determines how you see yourself. We are taught from an early age to achieve, perform, and prove ourselves. And there is nothing wrong with caring about the work you do, showing up consistently, or wanting to succeed. The problem starts when a disappointing result becomes a judgment about who you are. “I did not get the result I wanted” can quickly become “I failed.” And “I failed” can become “I am a failure.” Those are not the same thing. I talk about why your value comes from the qualities that make you who you are, things like curiosity, compassion, appreciation, and the way you choose to move through the world. You can still have goals. You can still care deeply. You can still put in a tremendous amount of effort. And you can also be okay when something does not work out. There is room to feel disappointed, frustrated, or hurt without turning those emotions into a story that something is wrong with you. Sometimes the healthiest thing you can do is sit with those feelings before moving forward. You do not need another accomplishment to prove that you are enough. Your effort matters. Your results can matter. But neither one determines your worth.
