How to Set Boundaries | EXACTLY What to Say
from Magic’s in the Mess · host Magic’s in the Mess
Do you say YES to plans knowing you don't want to go then you have make up an excuse not to go? This is extremely common and we are going to tell you exactly what to say initially so you can decline invitations without guilt! Welcome to The Hot Girl School! The podcast where we redefine confidence and go way beyond the reflection you see in the mirror. We're your hosts Lauren and Danielle, here to empower you to embrace your inner radiance because confidence is so much more than looks. Our goal is to help you become your best self. Whether you're strutting into an event or conquering the boardroom, join us as we explore topics like self love, inner strength and owning your unique journey to confidence. What is a boundary? Limits we set for ourselves to protect our emotional, mental and physical well-being. Why do we need boundaries? It's about self respect. It's so that you can show up authentically and whole heartedly for yourself and the people you are there to support. It's honoring YOU. How YOU want to spend your time, WHO you want to spend your time with and making sure that you are part of the equation. Doing everything for everyone else all the time leads to burn out and resentment. Setting the boundary teaches people how to treat you. Saying what you need or don't need from someone is challenging, BUT it shows the level of respect you have for yourself and tells the other person where you stand. Step 1: Get comfortable with SAYING NO! You can't do everything. Step 2: Understand how you feel. Is it the person you don't want to give your time to? Is it because you have more important things to do? Is it because you are feeling behind with work and/or your family? When you can pinpoint why you don't want to hang out with someone that makes it easier to set the boundary. Step 3: Identify your own needs. Do you feel energized or drained? Do you need more alone time or social time? How can you build your schedule out to reflect what you need. Step 4: Get comfortable saying them out loud. Remember, it may take a few tried to find the exact words you want to use to get your point across! Step 5: Have consistency with the boundaries you set. You are trying to start a new habit. This new pattern takes time to instill which means you need to give yourself grace. Stumble, fumble and fall and then get back up and the next time the opportunity arises to set the boundary, embrace the moment. Step 6: Being honest with how people respond to the boundary you have set. If they keep taking and pushing, it shows they don't fully respect you or your decision which can make you see the relationship through a different light. WARNING: YOU WILL FUMBLE and it could even be a lifelong struggle in certain situations! HERE IS WHAT TO SAY. When declining an invitation: "Thank you for the invite, Saturday doesn't work for me." There is no need to give a reason why. Thanks Mom for teaching me that! If you'd like to reschedule then you say: "Thank you for the invite, Saturday doesn't work for me, but I really want to make this happen. Does ______ work for you?" When you would like to go out and not drink: "I'm not drinking right now because I want to have a healthier lifestyle" or "I'm not drinking right now because I'm just as fun without alcohol!" NOTE TO SELF: No Days Off is not going to work forever! The hustle, the grind really only works when you are a total loner (in a good way) OR with your team that has the same mindset. Once you have a social life, a family, hobbies, etc., your ability to grind it out disappears. Last but not least, if the relationship fizzles out, don't feel the need to keep the relationship going. Behind the scenes, you were actually on the same page all along!
