I’m thrilled to introduce you to Johanna Kandel, the founder and CEO of The Alliance for Eating Disorders Awareness, and the author of Life Beyond Your Eating Disorder (Harlequin). After recovering from a ten-year-long battle with various eating disorders, Johanna founded The Alliance, based in West Palm Beach, Florida. Since its inception in 2000, The Alliance has brought information and awareness about eating disorders to more than 290,000 individuals nationally and internationally. As a passionate advocate for mental health and eating disorders legislation, Johanna has spent countless hours meeting with numerous members of Congress, and was part of the first-ever Eating Disorder Roundtable at the White House.Johanna is the immediate Past President of the Board of Directors for the Eating Disorders Coalition, a member of the Academy for Eating Disorders Advisory Board, a founding board member of the Eating Disorders Activist Network, and a member of the Eating Disorders Leadership Summit. She has received many awards for her ongoing outreach and advocacy work, including the Jefferson Award for Public Service© and Harlequin Enterprises' More Than Words Award. Johanna has appeared on national television programs including NBC Nightly News and The Today Show, and profiled in the New York Times, Cosmopolitan Magazine, and Glamour Magazine.I've had the honor and privilege of working alongside Johanna in the fighting against eating disorders since 2006, and we have collaborated on countless projects and events in an effort to raise awareness and funds for the cause. In December of 2019, the nonprofit I started in 2001, Helping Other People Eat (HOPE), merged with the Alliance to be able to continue to grow and scale our impact. I could not be more thrilled to know that something I care so deeply about is now in Johanna's hands.She is the epitome of a trailblazer and has been instrumental in saving countless lives as a result of her dedication to the field of eating disorders.
